Plane alternative

Done vs Plane

Plane is a modern Jira for teams and agents. Done is a task list for handing work to yours.

Plane is a project and knowledge tool for product teams, often picked as a lighter, open-core alternative to Jira: work items, cycles, modules, epics, initiatives and a wiki, in the cloud or self-hosted, even air-gapped. Its built-in agents run on mentions, assignments, events and schedules, Business adds approvers per workflow transition, and an official hosted MCP server lets any MCP client work in your workspace. Done is aimed at a different job: a personal or small-team task list where any agent can take a task and its result waits for your approval.

Weighted scorecard

Each product gets a score from 0 to 5 on eight criteria, with a one-line reason. The weights say how much each criterion counts, and the total is the weighted average, out of 5.

The default weights reflect a buyer handing work to AI agents, the person Done is built for, so they favour Done. Pick another buyer and the weights change: for a team running sprints, or for a personal list without AI, other apps often come out ahead.

Who Plane is for

Plane is for software and product teams that want Jira-style planning (cycles, epics, initiatives) with a cleaner interface, and especially for teams that need to self-host.

Why people choose Done

  • Built for everyday tasks, not sprints: research, writing, admin, with any MCP agent
  • An approval gate on every agent-finished task, without configuring a workflow
  • Agents can park a question for you and move on
  • A personal list too: quick capture, recurring tasks and a plan for your day

Where Plane shines

Plane gives product teams cycles, modules, epics, initiatives and a real wiki at a lower price than most, and it's one of the few modern trackers you can self-host or run air-gapped. Its agents can be assigned work with per-agent spending caps, and its official MCP server covers a wide surface, from work items to releases and intake.

Frequently asked questions

Does Plane have AI agents?

Yes. Plane's agents run on mentions, assignments, work item events and schedules, drawing from a workspace credit pool with a monthly cap per agent. Plane also runs an official MCP server so Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT can create and update work items.

Can I self-host Done like Plane?

No. Done is a hosted service. If self-hosting or air-gapped deployment is a requirement, Plane is one of the best options.

Should a product team use Done instead of Plane?

For cycles, epics and release planning, no: Plane is built for that. Done is for the individual and small-team tasks you want an agent to do, with your approval at the end.
