Use Done in ChatGPT

Connect Done to ChatGPT: turn on developer mode, add https://trydone.app/mcp as a custom MCP server, sign in with OAuth, and ChatGPT can work your tasks with your approval.

Who this is for

For ChatGPT users on the web whose plan or workspace allows developer mode and custom MCP servers — ChatGPT lists a custom MCP server as a plugin. On a Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin has to allow it first. You sign in to Done with OAuth, so there's no token to paste.

Add Done as a custom MCP server Sign in with OAuth

  1. In ChatGPT on the web, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode.
  2. Go to the Plugins page (chatgpt.com/plugins), click + and choose Add custom MCP server.
  3. Name it Done. Under Connection, enter https://trydone.app/mcp as the server URL, and set authentication to OAuth.
  4. Tick I understand and want to continue and create the plugin. ChatGPT lists the tools it found on Done.
  5. In a chat, type @ and pick Done. The first time, ChatGPT asks you to connect: sign in to Done and click Allow.

Done's consent screen says “An app at chatgpt.com calls itself …” with an Unverified app warning. That's expected: Done only vouches for sign-in addresses it knows, and chatgpt.com is where ChatGPT receives yours. Continue if you started the connection yourself.

What to say to it

Once Done is connected, talk to the assistant normally. Each of these maps to a real Done tool:

“What's on my plate today?”
get_todays_plan
“Add a task: send the invoice to Sam friday p1”
quick_capture
“Pick up your next Done task and propose a plan before you start.”
next_task → propose_plan
“If you hit a decision you can't make, ask me and keep going with the rest.”
ask_decision
“When it's finished, send it to me for approval.”
propose_completion

Every tool, prompt and resource Done exposes is listed in the MCP reference.

The approval gate

By default an assistant can't close your tasks. When it thinks a task is finished it calls propose_completion, which parks the task as Pending approval until you approve it or send it back from Needs you; substantial work starts with propose_plan, which waits for your go-ahead. A question goes through ask_decision: that task waits for your answer while the agent moves on to the next one. Done enforces this on its own server, so it holds whatever the assistant tries — an agent can only complete a task directly when you've set that task's Autonomy to let it.

Troubleshooting

There's no + button or Add custom MCP server
Developer mode is off, or your plan or workspace doesn't allow custom MCP servers. On a Business or Enterprise workspace, ask an admin to enable it.
ChatGPT asks before every change
ChatGPT confirms write actions by default. Done marks every tool that only reads as read-only, so only the ones that change your board ask.
New Done tools don't show up
Open the plugin's page and choose Refresh to reload Done's tool list, then start a new chat.
Done isn't available in voice
ChatGPT doesn't offer MCP plugins in Advanced Voice. Use a text chat.

FAQ

Can I use an MCP token instead of signing in?

Not in ChatGPT: its custom servers take OAuth or no authentication, and Done doesn't accept unauthenticated connections. Use OAuth.

Can ChatGPT work my list on a schedule?

Yes. A ChatGPT scheduled task can reach Done through the same connection; the MCP docs have the steps and the prompt to give it.

Is there a shared API key for Done?

No. Every connection belongs to one Done account: an OAuth sign-in, or an MCP token you generate yourself. There is no shared or global key. Each connected assistant is listed under Settings → Agent access, where you can revoke it in a click.

What can the assistant see?

Only what your account can see: your workspaces and anything shared with you. A read-only, one-project or one-workspace token narrows that further.

Does it cost anything?

The Free plan includes 100 agent (MCP) calls a month; Pro and Teams are unlimited. The assistant's own plan is separate.
