ClickUp vs Asana
The everything app against the structured work platform. Which one should run your team's projects?
ClickUp and Asana are the two work platforms teams shortlist most. ClickUp tries to replace several tools at once: tasks, docs, whiteboards, chat, time tracking and dashboards, on a free plan with unlimited members. Asana is more structured and less configurable: projects with timelines, dependencies, goals, portfolios and workload, built for coordinating many teams. Both now have AI agents that work inside your projects, and both run an official MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can read and update either one.
Weighted scorecard
Each product gets a score from 0 to 5 on eight criteria, with a one-line reason. The weights say how much each criterion counts, and the total is the weighted average, out of 5.
The default weights reflect a buyer handing work to AI agents, the person Done is built for, so they favour Done. Pick another buyer and the weights change: for a team running sprints, or for a personal list without AI, other apps often come out ahead.
Weights for
For someone who delegates tasks to Claude, ChatGPT or other agents and wants to approve what comes back.
Scores are our judgment from each vendor's public docs and pricing, checked on the date at the foot of this page. Anything a vendor doesn't document scores 0.
Choose ClickUp if…
- You want tasks, docs, whiteboards and chat in one workspace
- Your whole team needs a free plan, with unlimited members
- You want time tracking on tasks without another app
Choose Asana if…
- You run structured projects across several teams, with goals and portfolios
- You'd rather adopt a clear way of working than configure one
- Managers need workload and portfolio views across projects
The verdict
Pick ClickUp if you want to consolidate tasks, docs, chat and time tracking into one highly configurable tool, starting free for the whole team. Pick Asana if you coordinate structured, cross-team work and value a cleaner, more opinionated setup with portfolios and goals. Both have built-in agents and an official MCP server, and in both an agent can be asked to pause for approval on certain steps, but neither holds every piece of an outside agent's finished work for your sign-off.
Where Done fits
Done isn't a work platform for a whole company. It's for the tasks you'd rather an agent did: assign one to Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP agent, and its result waits on the task for your approval, by default. Plenty of teams keep ClickUp or Asana for projects and use Done for delegated work; Done imports Asana's CSV export directly and reads any CSV with a title column.

Frequently asked questions
Is ClickUp better than Asana?
Neither is better across the board. ClickUp does more in one place and its free plan covers an unlimited team; Asana is more structured, with stronger portfolios, goals and workload views on its Advanced plan. Teams that want one tool for everything lean ClickUp; teams coordinating many projects lean Asana.
Which is cheaper, ClickUp or Asana?
ClickUp, on paper. ClickUp Core is $9 and Business $17 per user a month billed yearly. Asana Starter is $10.99 and Advanced $24.99 per user a month billed yearly ($13.49 and $30.49 monthly). ClickUp's free plan has unlimited members; Asana's covers two people.
Do ClickUp and Asana have AI agents and an MCP server?
Yes, both. ClickUp's Super Agents run on AI credits included with every plan, and its MCP server is on every plan with a daily call cap. Asana's AI Teammates are metered per request on paid plans, and its MCP server runs at mcp.asana.com/v2/mcp. Neither waits for your approval on everything an outside agent finishes; that's what Done is built for.
