Notion vs ClickUp
A docs-first workspace against a task-first platform. Both want to be your team's one tool.
Notion and ClickUp both pitch themselves as the one app a team needs, from opposite ends. Notion starts from docs, wikis and databases you shape into a system, including a task system. ClickUp starts from tasks and adds docs, whiteboards, chat, time tracking and dashboards around them. Both now have agents that work inside the workspace, Custom Agents in Notion and Super Agents in ClickUp, and both run an official MCP server with more than 60 documented tools.
Weighted scorecard
Each product gets a score from 0 to 5 on eight criteria, with a one-line reason. The weights say how much each criterion counts, and the total is the weighted average, out of 5.
The default weights reflect a buyer handing work to AI agents, the person Done is built for, so they favour Done. Pick another buyer and the weights change: for a team running sprints, or for a personal list without AI, other apps often come out ahead.
Weights for
For someone who delegates tasks to Claude, ChatGPT or other agents and wants to approve what comes back.
Scores are our judgment from each vendor's public docs and pricing, checked on the date at the foot of this page. Anything a vendor doesn't document scores 0.
Choose Notion if…
- Your tasks live next to docs, wikis and project databases
- You want to design your own system with properties and views
- You want agents that keep a shared knowledge base up to date
Choose ClickUp if…
- You want task management ready-made: sprints, Gantt, workload and time tracking
- Your whole team needs a free plan with unlimited members
- You want chat and whiteboards next to the work
The verdict
Pick Notion if knowledge is the center of your team's work and tasks are one database among many; its flexibility is unmatched once you've built your system. Pick ClickUp if tasks are the center and you want project features (sprints, Gantt, workload, time tracking) without building them. Both have in-app agents and broad official MCP servers; neither holds an outside agent's finished work for your approval.
Where Done fits
Done is a task list built for handing work to the agent you choose, not a workspace. Assign a task to Claude, ChatGPT or any MCP agent and its result waits for your approval; it can ask you a question instead of guessing. Done connects to Notion, so an agent can read the relevant pages while it works, and imports Notion's CSV export.
